Physical - Gross and Fine Motor Skills

There are different ways that you can aid your child's physical needs. We have split these into Gross and Fine Motor Skills. Gross Motor Skills are those activities that aid the use of our larger muscles such as running, walking, skipping. Fine Motor Skills are those activities that aid the use of our smaller muscles such as writing, holding, cutting.

Gross Motor Skills

Some activities that could be used for your child's Gross Motor Skills are;
  • Oak National Academy - Alongside the national lessons, the Oak National Academy has an area dedicated to children with addition needs - this has a section that includes physical development.
  • Cosmic yoga
  • Andy’s Wild Workouts
  • Equally activities in the garden can be a great way to break up the day. There are some pictures below with different ideas. If you do not have the equipment shown you can just adapt the idea - for example use a piece of paper instead of a hoop or a rolled up sock instead of a beanbag!

Fine Motor Skills

Some activities that could be used for your child's Fine Motor Skills are;
  • Disco dough
  • Dance Mat
  • Make holes in pieces of cardboard from boxes so your child can practice their threading skills with string or ribbons.
  • Make playdough at home, a recipe can be found here.
  • Use chunky chalks (or some small stones will make marks on paving) outdoors on the ground to make marks or draw.
  • Equally, activities such as those pictured below are a great way to practise these skills. Again, if you do not have the items pictured you can adapt the ideas. For example, instead of printing the pencil control worksheets you can draw the line and ask your child to trace over your line in a different colour, or instead of tweezers you could use a peg!
