Last week the Year 1s made an amazing discovery in the school field. An archaeologist wrote a letter to the class, explaining that they thought we might have some fossils on our school site. The children were very excited to dig up the fields and made some amazing discoveries. Real dinosaur fossils! Well done children for your super team work and perseverance to find the fossils.
We've had a warm and busy first week back in Reception. The children have loved watching our tadpoles grow legs and develop into froglets. We now have our first frog ready to be released into the pond! Our focus story has been The Very Hungry Caterpillar where the children have been working hard to write sentences to retell the story. Our class caterpillars are growing too and the children have loved making observations of the caterpillars each day. We have learnt about the lifecycle of a butterfly and next week will be making and information book all about it.
In Maths we have been learning about halving and sharing equally into two groups. This is something that can be practised easily at home too.
The children have enjoyed making their own minibeast clay imprints and will be painting them next week once they've dried out.
Next week the children will continue to develop their understanding of halving and sharing equally.
We have had such an exciting week in Reception! In Literacy, the children have been writing shopping lists of things we would need for our Royal Ball. In Maths, we have been looking at one more and one less than a given number up to 20. Then towards the end of the week, we had our Royal Ball. The children had a wonderful time decorating and eating their biscuits. They all had a fantastic time during the ball and especially loved their surprise visit from Cinderella!
All of the Reception staff would like to wish you all a lovely half term.
See you all soon.
Reception had a super week of learning last week.
We continued to get visits from the Elves and the Shoemaker and we have enjoyed looking at lots of different types of shoes. We have also been writing our own letters to the Elves asking them for our favourite type of shoe.
In preparation for our ball this week we have also been learning how to waltz. We are looking forward to our ball!
After sharing the story of 'The Elves and the Shoemaker' the children were so excited when two little elves had sneaked into their classroom and left a beautiful pair of shoes alongside a letter. The children have started to write letters back to the elves and have thought of lots of great questions they would like to ask them. I wonder if they'll visit over the weekend and leave any more surprises?
In Maths we have been using tens frames to represent amounts up to 20. The children have been learning to count on from 10. They have also tried counting our tadpoles in the classroom which is not an easy task!
We have been sketching, tasting and describing different fruits such as pomegranate, kiwi, melon, lemon and pineapple. We are learning how to keep healthy, from cleaning our teeth twice a day to getting a good nights sleep.
If that wasn't enough fun we also had a very special delivery from Her Majesty the Queen! We cannot wait for our royal ball in a couple of weeks time.
Although this week has only been a very short week, reception have worked really hard and learned so much.
Sealions, Starfish Seahorse and Jellyfish walked to the bridge in the park near the school to help bring the story The Three Billy Goats Gruff to life. The children acted out the story and took turns to 'trip, trap' over the bridge. They also sketched something that they could see on their walk. They all really enjoyed themselves and it was lovely to be able to make the most of things in our local environment.
In Maths we are continuing to learn about bigger numbers and have looked at how the teen numbers are made up of smaller numbers added to 10. It is great to see the children being so interested and excited by numbers. When you are out and about with your children please look out for different numbers, for example door numbers, car registration numbers, road signs etc.
We have also been learning about crossing the road safely and the children have been playing with our new road safety sets.
Next week we will be reading the story 'The Elves and the Shoemaker.' The children will be designing new shoes, writing to the elves and playing in the shoe shop role play area. Alongside this we shall be talking about healthy eating and tasting lots of unfamiliar fruits. In Maths we will be representing bigger numbers using ten frames and measuring our feet to see whose are the biggest.
Find out all of the exciting things we have been doing.
