PE & SPORT
We actively encourage our children to participate in as much sport as possible. We run a variety of after-school and lunchtime sporting clubs. We have sports and dance coaches who come in to support our delivery of the curriculum. Children in Year 4 benefit from swimming lessons at a local indoor pool.
Miss Wright has worked very hard over the last two years and we are pleased to say that we have been awarded a Gold Kite Mark and a Silver Kite Mark to recognise our achievements.
The children take part in many competitive sporting activities and compete against other schools in the county regularly. Some activities include, tag rugby, tennis and athletics.
Here at Wootton Lower School we follow the National Curriculum in Years 1-4 and in the Foundation Stage we teach the Early Years Curriculum. The National Curriculum and EYFS is taught through a “Creative Curriculum” providing children with wonderful and exciting ways to learn. All subjects are taught through a themed topic, covering all National Curriculum objectives in a fun and creative way. Please see our Policies page for more details.
We use Sounds-write to teach our children to read and write. Sounds-Write is a quality first phonics programme and is acknowledged by the DfE as meeting all its criteria for an effective phonics teaching programme. It is an exciting and highly successful approach to the teaching of reading, spelling and writing.
Each year group covers one topic per term. Each topic is introduced through a ‘stunning start’, which is designed to engage children in their learning and finishes with a ‘fabulous finish’ to celebrate all that has been achieved in the topic. From trips to Woburn Safari Park, Ice Skating, visiting the National Space Centre and Stoke Bruerne to fabulous days in school organised by the teachers, the children thoroughly enjoy these experiences.
Throughout the year, themed days are woven into the curriculum to extend the breadth and balance of opportunities we offer our pupils. These include– Science Day, World Book Day, RE celebration days and Language Days. During these days the year groups are mixed together and teachers organise fun activities throughout the day, linking to the theme.
